Structure span

Structure span

Structure span is the distance measured horizontally between the two outermost supports of a superstructure, e.g. columns, walls, beams or bays. It is one of the important parameters determining the dimensions and geometry of the structure, influencing the choice of materials, cross-sections and manufacturing technology.

It also determines the structure's strength, stiffness and behaviour under loads: dead load, imposed load, wind load or seismic load. In Poland, the last factor does not play a significant role, but is taken into account in the design of structures.

As far as design practice is concerned, span optimisation reduces material costs and streamlines the construction process. In construction and engineering, the span of the structure is important in the design of structures such as bridges, industrial halls, roofs or floors. That is, where the right choice of span influences the functionality and safety of the project.
