Suspended ceiling is a lightweight construction installed below the actual ceiling. It usually consists of a load-bearing grid (steel or aluminium) and finishing panels - usually of gypsum, mineral fibre, metal or plastic.
The main functions of a suspended ceiling are:
- aesthetically pleasing interior finish,
- concealing technical installations (e.g. electrical, ventilation, fire protection),
- improving room acoustics,
- thermal and acoustic insulation,
- recessed lighting and other fittings can be installed.
The suspended ceiling is used in both residences (e.g. in living rooms, kitchens or bathrooms), as well as in offices, commercial and public buildings. They can be flat, multi-level or decorative. They can also be demountable (e.g. coffered ceilings in offices) or permanent (e.g. from plasterboard on a grid). Their advantage is quick installation, ease of installation and the ability to hide unevenness of the ceiling or cracks.
