External partition is the structural element of a building. It separates its interior from external conditions (external wall, roof, floor on the ground, ceiling over unheated space).
The main task of the building envelope is:
- protection against heat lossmoisture, noise and atmospheric influences
- ensuring thermal and acoustic comfort inside the building.
In modern timber-frame construction, the building envelope is multi-layered. They consist of structural, insulating (thermal and acoustic), damp-proof and façade layers. Their correct design and execution is important for energy efficiency, durability and the right microclimate inside the building.
Building envelope parameters such as heat transfer coefficient (U) or air tightness, are regulated by law and are relevant to the assessment of a building's energy performance.
