Ventilation ducts are the components of a building's ventilation system whose function is to transport air between rooms and the outside environment. They come in two basic forms: gravity ventilation (vertical ducts without forced flow) and mechanical ventilation (e.g. with recuperation). Ducts are made of metal (usually galvanised steel), PVC or special thermally and acoustically insulated plastics.
Their correct design and construction ensures a healthy microclimate, removes moisture and pollutants, and contributes to thermal comfort.
In modern homes, designers and installers often conceal ducts in floors or suspended ceilings, and heat recovery systems provide efficient air exchange without energy loss.
