the diffusion resistance of a material

Diffusion resistance of a material

Diffusion resistance of a material This is the ability of a material to limit the passage of water vapour through its structure. This parameter plays an important role in maintaining the durability of building partitions and a healthy indoor climate. It determines how difficult it is for water vapour to pass through a given building material as a result of diffusion. The higher the diffusion resistance, the lower the material’s permeability to moisture in the form of water vapour.

Diffusion resistance is of great importance in the design of building partitions, as it affects the ability of moisture to escape from inside walls, roofs and ceilings. Incorrectly coordinated layers may lead to water vapour condensation, dampness in the insulation and a reduction in the structure’s durability. This parameter is most commonly described by the coefficient μ, i.e. the water vapour diffusion resistance coefficient.
