Structural layout is the way in which the load-bearing elements of a building, such as walls, columns, beams and floors, are arranged and work together. It determines how e.g. modular house transfers loads from the upper parts of the building to the foundations, influences the stability of the building, the distribution of internal forces and the possibilities of shaping the usable space.
Depending on the solution adopted, loads are carried by load-bearing walls, a column and beam system or a frame structure. Many buildings also use a combination of these systems. The choice of the appropriate structural system depends on the function of the building, the span of the rooms and the use of house building technology. Different solutions are used for masonry buildings and others for wooden or steel structures.
Structural layout is one of the basic elements of a construction project. The safety of the structure and the possibility of subsequent changes to the layout of the rooms depend on its correct design.
