Fire resistance class This is a classification that specifies a building component’s ability to retain its required properties when exposed to fire for a specified period of time. It indicates the component’s ability to function under fire conditions without losing the properties specified in the relevant standards. In the case of structural elements, the fire resistance class primarily refers to the structure’s ability to maintain its load-bearing capacity and stability when exposed to high temperatures.
Fire resistance classes are designated using alphabetic and numeric symbols. The letters specify the type of property being assessed, such as fire resistance (R), fire integrity (E) or thermal insulation (I). The number, in turn, indicates the duration of these properties, expressed in minutes. Fire resistance class is one of the key parameters taken into account when designing buildings. It is also taken into account when selecting materials and structural solutions with regard to fire safety.
