Compensation of structural movements

Compensation of structural movements is a set of design and execution solutions used to safely accommodate displacements and deformations in the structural elements of a building. Its purpose is to limit the generation of excessive stresses and prevent damage to the structure and finishes. Construction movements can result from fixed and variable loads. They also result from changes in temperature, shrinkage and creep of materials, ground settlement and differences in the operation of different parts of the building. Compensation for these movements is achieved through the use of:

  • dilatation,
  • working slots,
  • sliding connections,
  • flexible fixings,
  • appropriate design of construction details.

Properly designed compensation for structural movement maintains the integrity of the structure. It also reduces the risk of cracks and deformations and contributes to the durability and safety of the house throughout its lifetime.
