Stairs is a building structure to overcome a vertical difference in level, consisting of a series of steps arranged in such a way as to allow comfortable and safe movement. Stairs have a communicative function. They connect different floors of buildings or different levels of the ground, and their design and material of construction depend on their purpose and operating conditions.
They can be made of concrete, wood, metal, stone or glass. Their form and layout should be adapted to the functional and aesthetic requirements. Due to the way in which the flights are organised, several types of stairs can be distinguished, including straight stairs, tread stairs, spiral stairs and fan stairs. Appropriate ergonomics, flight width, step height and safety features such as balustrades are important for the safety and comfort of using stairs.
