Roof batten

Roof batten is an elongated timber member, usually of rectangular cross-section (e.g. 40 × 60 mm), used in the roof construction as part of a grid under a roofing. The battens are fixed horizontally (along the eaves) to the rafters or counter-battens, at equal intervals, adapted to the type and size of the covering (e.g. tiles, sheet tiles, shingles).

Their primary function is to transfer the weight of the roofing to the supporting structure and to ensure that the various elements of the roofing are properly arranged and fixed. They work together with counter-battens, which create a ventilation space between the roofing membrane and the battens, which enables the drainage of moisture from the roof slope.

Roofing battens must be made of properly dried and protected wood. Their installation should be precise, as it affects the durability, tightness and aesthetics of the roofing.
