Flat roof is a type of roof structure characterised by a low pitch angle, typically between 0.5% and 5% (i.e. approximately 0.3° to 3°). Its main purpose, apart from weather protection, is to effectively rainwater drainage. This is achieved through appropriate technological gradients and drainage systems (e.g. roof drains, linear gutters).
Flat roofs can have a protective function as well as a utilitarian function, such as:
- green terraces (so-called green roofs),
- leisure terraces,
- space for the installation of photovoltaic panels or air-conditioning units.
Based on construction and function, flat roofs are divided into:
- unventilated flat roofs - layers laid directly on the ceiling,
- ventilated flat roofs - with an air cavity between the ceiling and the insulation layer.
The flat roof is a popular solution in modern architecture, especially in energy-efficient and modular homes. It allows the building block to be simplified, reduction of construction costs and efficient use of the space above the top floor.
